Under tre års tid arbetade Alison Gerber med att undersöka och dokumentera konstnärers arbete. Därefter skapade hon ett nytt sorts klassifikationssystem, baserat på standardiserade sociologiska forskningsmetoder. Med Artists' Work Classification presenteras detta system i en skrift med korta beskrivningar av varje identifierat arbetsmoment. Boken liknar en torr manual eller en handbok men har också en komisk dimension. Artists' Work Classification synliggör alla de dagliga aktiviteter som kommer med konstnärsyrket och lyfter frågor om hur stor betydelse arkivmetoder och klassifikationssystem har för vår förståelse, liksom hur värdering av konstnärligt arbete sker. En del av Gerbers projekt var att sända boken till 500 bibliotek för att införlivas i deras hyllor och kataloger.    

Alison Gerber arbetade tidigare som konstnär med en utbildning från University of Minnesota. Idag är Gerber universitetslektor i sociologi vid Lunds universitet. Som sociolog har hon fortsatt att utforska konstnärsrollen, exempelvis i The Work of Art – value in creative careers, där hon ägnar sig åt intersektionen mellan konst, värde och kärlek.

Alison Gerber spent three years examining and documenting artists’ work. After that, she created a new kind of classification system based on standardised sociological research methods. Artists’ Work Classification presents this system in a booklet that briefly describes each distinct phase of work. The book reads like a dry manual or handbook, but also has a comic dimension. Artists' Work Classification illuminates all the daily activities that come with life as a working artist and raises questions of how important archival methods and classification systems are to our understanding and how artistic work is evaluated. One part of Gerber’s project was to send the book to five hundred libraries for inclusion in their stacks and catalogues.

Alison Gerber worked previously as an artist after graduating from the University of Minnesota. Today she is a senior lecturer in sociology at Lund University. As a sociologist, she has continued to explore the role of the artist, as in her book The Work of Art: Value in Creative Careers, in which she examines the intersection between art, value and love.
